Meeting Point: The Warsaw Uprising Monument (on the corner of Krasinski Square / Długa Street)

Our journey begins at one of the city's most iconic symbols of defiance. Here, we establish our historical bedrock by examining the brutal geopolitics of the Eastern Front, the shifting Soviet lines, and the electric wave of hope that compelled an underground army to stand up against absolute tyranny.

​​​Stop 1: The Field Hospital Massacre (Ulica Długa)

We immediately confront the brutal reality of total war. At this site, on August 21, 1944, Oskar Dirlewanger’s penal regiment advanced into Stare Miasto, we analyze the psychology of the perpetrators, tracing their tactics back to the anti-partisan campaigns in the forests of Belarus, while honoring the unshakeable resolve of the Polish medics, wounded soldiers, and civilians who refused to surrender their humanity to men sent from Satan himself. 

 

Stop 2: The Borgward Booby-Trapped Tank Catastrophe (Ulica Jana Kilińskiego)

On August 13, a captured German armored vehicle was driven into the Old Town amidst civilian celebration. It was a calculated, devastating trap. We stand on the exact pavement where a massive detonation claimed over 300 lives instantly, exploring the psychological warfare deployed by the SS to break the spirit of the Uprising.

 

Stop 3: The Old Town Market Place

Now a breathtakingly restored UNESCO World Heritage site, the Market Place was completely reduced to ash by Luftwaffe bombardment and heavy artillery. Using archival imagery, we contrast the beautiful present with the grim past, focusing on the individual lives cut short amidst the rubble.

 

The Decompression Break

History of this magnitude demands reflection. We step away from the front lines for a brief respite to grab a coffee, decompress, and catch our breath. This is a space to process the weight of the stories, share lighter travel stories, and mentally prepare for the tactical shift ahead.

 

Stop 4: Piłsudski Square & The Saxon Gardens

We explore pre-war Warsaw’s architectural crown jewels, the Saxon and Brühl Palaces, using stories and photos of pre-1939 Warsaw. Transitioning into the chilling, firsthand German combat testimony of engineer Matthias Schenk, we reconstruct the chaotic, alcohol-fueled night Dirlewanger’s men broke through the insurgent lines to evacuate the trapped garrison. We conclude this movement at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, examining the ongoing modern excavations of the palace foundations before walking through the peaceful Saxon Gardens on our way to our final stop.

 

Finale: The Prudential Building & Warsaw’s Resurrection

Our journey culminates at Europe's second-tallest skyscraper of the 1930s, a building that absorbed thousands of artillery shells but refused to fall. As the smoke of 1944 clears, we look toward the future. We discuss the traumatic transition to Soviet occupation, the decades of partitions, and the miraculous, modern resurrection of Poland into one of the safest, most vibrant, and fiercely proud nations in Europe and the world today.
